E-ink key chains: give a small canvas one clear job

Plan a compact label or graphic for the known 1.54-inch key-chain display profile, with a clear distinction between screen and case colors.

Start with the message

A key-chain display offers a small canvas for a personal label. Think of a short name, a simple symbol, or a way to distinguish similar sets of keys.

Decide what someone should recognise first. Give that element most of the canvas, then add a second line only if it remains readable. A miniature version of a poster usually carries more detail than the small layout needs.

Work with the documented canvas

The current key-chain firmware README names a 1.54-inch-class display. The app-facing display-format table specifies 200 × 200 pixels, four display colors, and a 10,000-byte encoded image. Use those pixels to plan the layout, rather than treating the diagonal size as an image resolution.

The display palette is BWYR: black, white, yellow, and red. A red pixel is part of the image; a red case would be an enclosure option. Check the product listing separately for available case finishes.

Build a simple composition

Begin with a white canvas and a short, dark label. Leave space around the text, then use a supported accent color for one meaningful element. Keep the meaning readable without color alone: a word or symbol can reinforce a colored marker.

For artwork, simplify fine texture before converting it to the target palette. Inspect the converted image at its native pixel dimensions. Check that counters inside letters remain open and that adjacent lines have not merged. Then check readability on the actual display.

Avoid putting sensitive personal information into a label that may be seen by other people. If the layout includes a machine-readable code, validate the final rendered result in the intended setup; a code in an image is not proof that a device or phone can use it.

Prepare the complete image

The mobile app composes text and graphics into one canvas. It then reads device metadata and encodes the matching display format before transfer. A filename or selected product category should not override the connected device’s dimensions or palette.

Read screen size and display palette for selection advice, then NFC image preparation for the upload stages. Check the exact product listing for availability and supported accessories.
