Choosing an e-ink screen: size, pixels, and palette

Separate physical size, pixel resolution, display palette, and enclosure color when planning an IMPixED application.

Make four separate decisions

A display’s nominal size, its pixel canvas, the colors it can show, and its enclosure color answer different questions. Combining them into one label makes it easy to choose artwork that cannot fit or assume a product option that has not been established.

Attribute What it describes What to check
Size class A nominal physical screen size The exact panel and finished product dimensions
Pixel resolution The canvas used to prepare an image Width, height, and orientation from device metadata
Display palette Colors that can appear in the image BW, BWR, or BWYR for the selected profile
Enclosure color The appearance of the case A separately verified product option

Explore Key Chains, Price Tags, ID Cards, and Billboards in the IMPixED catalog. The 1.54-inch size class appears in both the key-chain and price-tag previews; compare the exact product specifications when choosing between them.

Begin with the content and the pixels

For a short label, a compact canvas may be enough. A price tag needs room for an item name and price; an identification layout needs to handle long names; an information board needs a clear hierarchy. Test your layout with the longest content it will need to show.

The documented key-chain canvas is 200 × 200 pixels. Other named price-tag canvases include 122 × 250, 152 × 296, and 128 × 296 pixels. A square and a narrow portrait canvas need different compositions. A larger nominal diagonal does not tell the app which image dimensions or encoding to use.

Work at the target resolution, check long text, and decide orientation before encoding. Review the final raster, then verify physical readability on the intended hardware. Do not infer a viewing distance from resolution alone.

Choose the palette for the message

BW means black and white. BWR means black, white, and red. BWYR means black, white, yellow, and red. These are limited display palettes, not names for case finishes and not arbitrary full-color reproduction.

Start with a composition that works through contrast, spacing, and text hierarchy. Add a supported accent color only when it helps distinguish information. Keep labels or symbols alongside meaningful colors. If the original artwork uses other colors or gradients, inspect what remains after converting it to the supported palette.

Check display palette and enclosure color separately in the product selector. Available combinations, accessories and compatibility are specific to each model.

Match the exact profile

The firmware’s 2.90-inch four-color price-tag profile names SE0290MNP26-FNG-A0. A similarly sized part with a different identifier is not automatically equivalent. The generic 0750-2c profile is another caution: its retained folder suffix differs from its actual BWR palette.

For app preparation, device metadata supplies the display part, dimensions, color count, pixel-format ID, and required byte length. Use that contract even when a product selector or filename suggests something else. Follow NFC image preparation for the next step.
