E-ink ID cards: make identification readable and deliberate

Plan readable names, roles, and graphics for an e-ink identification layout.

Decide what needs to be visible

ID Cards are an intended IMPixED application for identification layouts. A name, a role, and a simple visual marker can each have a distinct place on the canvas. Start by deciding what a reader needs to identify, then remove information that does not serve that purpose.

The ID Cards range is coming soon. This article explores layout choices while finished product specifications are being confirmed.

Give the primary text room

Build a sample with a short name and another with a longer name. Check line wrapping, margins, and the relationship between name and role. Test punctuation and the actual character set the layout needs, rather than assuming a font supports every glyph.

The firmware’s text-rendering notes put this work in the app. Text is rasterized into the same image canvas as graphics; it is not sent through a separate production text-rendering command. The small reference bitmap font in those notes is a test style, not a requirement to use that font in every identification layout.

Treat color as an aid

A display palette limits which image colors can be encoded. BW is black and white, BWR adds red, and BWYR includes yellow as well. A role or status should remain understandable through words or shapes when its color is not distinguishable.

The palette says nothing about the case, holder, lanyard, or other accessories. Nor does the existence of a generic panel profile validate its dimensions or mounting for a finished ID card. Those choices need their own product information.

Keep identification separate from authorization

An image containing a name or code is visible information. It does not authenticate the holder or grant access. Similarly, NFC image transfer does not establish compatibility with a door reader, attendance system, or identity service.

Choose visible personal details deliberately and avoid adding information simply because space remains. If a layout includes a code, test the final display and intended reader separately. Check reader compatibility for each intended integration.

Use screen size and display palette to frame the canvas decision and NFC image preparation to understand the image workflow.
